Congregational Church of Batavia

When the roof trusses of this 150-year-old church were found to be failing, immediate action had to be taken to stabilize the building and prevent further damage to the structure. After the initial stabilization, the church hired Allen+Pepa Architects to orchestrate the repair and renovation efforts so that they could be sure that all the repair bids included the same elements, and that the renovation would serve the church far into the future. In addition to the new roof, the renovation included a new arched plaster ceiling, new paint and floor finishes and new curved pews. An acoustician was consulted to help pick materials that would best serve the acoustics of the space.

Batavia Eastside Center (project under Burnidge Cassell, Assoc.)

The Batavia Park District transformed this historic church and school into a recreational facility that can be used for concerts, banquets, receptions and a variety of community activities. The project included exterior restoration, an addition, and a complete interior remodeling that created an invigorating but historically sensitive space. The work on the facility included the renovation of a catering kitchen, classrooms and a gymnasium.

Grace Lutheran Church of Lily Lake

To accommodate growth in a rapidly developing area, Grace Lutheran Church of Lily Lake needed to expand in order to serve more people, appear more inviting, and increase the size and quality of their classroom spaces. This project- currently under construction- included a comprehensive site design to find a balance of parking, water detention and greenspace. The new addition includes a new narthex and a stunning 2- story lobby with a cathedral ceiling, new classrooms, expanded offices, and an exciting new fellowship area. The resulting design is complementary to the existing facility and within the church’s financial and spacial limitations.

Bethany Lutheran Church (project under Burnidge-Cassell and Assoc.)

One of the main objectives of this renovation was to bring back the Gothic character of the sanctuary which was hidden in a 1950’s renovation. The project also included the installation of new lighting, sound and mechanical systems, renovation of daycare spaces, and interior renovation of the narthex and lobby.

Calvary Episcopal Church Columbarium

This columbarium was designed for a 150-year-old stone church. The design calls to mind the transcept plan of the church’s interior and provides a space to to be used for outdoor services and ceremonies. The design is being built in phases.

Seventh Day Adventist Church

This church was designed for a congregation looking to build a new church home on an existing property. The site was located on a busy intersection in Glenview with an existing structure on it. The 10,000sf building needed to fit within the existing awkwardly shaped site as well as meet the existing and planned needs of the congregation.

The program for this church included a 200+ seat main sanctuary, a smaller “youth” sanctuary, a 4,500sf recreation area and a lower level for classrooms and fellowship hall.
