About:

This building served as Kendall County’s Jail and Sheriff's residence from 1893 until 1990. After a brief period of use as a local government office, the building was vacated and fell into disrepair. In 2003, the preservation group Landmarks Illinois named the building to its list of Most Endangered Historic Places in Illinois. Through the advocacy of preservation organizations and local government officials, the building was eventually sold to a developer with a vision for converting the building and its garage into apartments and ground-floor retail. Allen + Pepa worked closely with the owner to make this vision a reality, converting the garage into four 1-bedroom apartments each with a large balcony overlooking the Fox River. The first floor of the sheriff’s residence was converted into a salon and spa. The second floor and attic of the residence were remodeled to create a 3-bed, 2-bath apartment and the historic jail was preserved at the request of the local historical authority. The project won the 2022 Kendall County Historic Preservation Commission Award.
